My Thoughts

At the beginning of the book Gerry introduces the reader to his eleven year old self. In this honest memoir of his struggles with life as a child, the author shares his personal journey. It’s a sad start in life and I admire Gerry for writing how he felt about the world. His observations during his time in hospital were heart breaking. It really grabbed my attention and made me realise how short life is and what’s really important.

I finally had nowhere to go, nowhere to be, nothing to chase, no mask to hide behind and nothing to cling to. I was stripped bare, in nothing but a free pair of pyjamas from the hospital.

Awaken Your Power Within is a book of two halves. Part 1 is all about letting go. Jam packed with examples of the sorts of things we can get hung up on. As you read each chapter you are invited to ‘Take A Moment’ and think about what it means to you. The author asks several questions to make you think and to help you identify what you’ve learnt. I found these really helpful so would definitely recommend you use these breaks to do the exercises. Also, have a journal handy to write down your thoughts and things that you may want to explore further.

I liked how the book included bold side notes during each chapter. These were either important points Gerry was trying to get across, thought provoking quotes or recommendations to put into action. Some non fiction books can be heavy reading. You need to be in the right mindset to absorb the information. I prefer books that present facts, figures and the science bits in bitesize chunks. This book goes some way to doing this, although the chapters are quite long 10+ pages!

Part 2 of the book is all about the path to your true self. It guides the reader to explore ways to implement the learnings and insights from the book. If I’m honest I struggled slightly with the chapter The soul is Visible including affirmations and meditation. But that’s just a personal experience and doesn’t mean to say that it won’t resonate with other readers. We’re all different right, self development is a personal journey.

I was intrigued by the discussion point about identifying what is fact and what are stories that we tell ourselves. As natural story tellers, with creative imaginations, authors and book worms with find this fascinating. The author challenges the reader to identify the four voices in their heads. To find out what these are you’ll have to go and order a copy of the book 🙂

Take aways from the book

I like to share three take aways from non fiction books that I review. There are so many great quotes and thought provoking points in this book. Here are three that resonated with me:

  • “Having a morning routine is a really important way to greet your day. It automatically reduces stress as it eliminates that morning rush.’
  • “The average human lifespan is only 900 months. Out of that 900 we sleep 300. We have approximately 600 waking months on this planet. Depending on your age right now, you can work out roughly how many months you have left.” – A shocking thought! Don’t waste time on anything that doesn’t matter to you. Cherish the people and things that do matter every single day.
  • “We don’t get to live once, we die once – we get to live every day.”

Finally, in the closing section of the book there’s a handy table, a Calendar of Daily Events. A simple way to put into practise what you’ve read and learned throughout the book. There’s also a really useful summary section, which I liked and will refer back to.

Summary

Thought provoking, powerful and truly motivating.

We all have things from our past that can play on our minds. They can pop up any time and influence our thinking and decision making. Awaken The Power Within challenges you to let go of things you can’t change. Delve into exercises and challenges to find what really matters deep down.
