My thoughts

In this collection of short stories, Jeffery Deaver introduces the theme of ‘Nothing Good Happens After Midnight.’ Each story is based around this theme, providing an array of suspense and chilling tales.

I must admit, I’ve not read many short stories and this is my first anthology book. It definitely won’t be my last, I really enjoyed this style of writing.

Thirteen stories including serial killers, psychopaths and strange goings on in the middle of the night. Each story in this collections took me 20-30 minutes to read. I liked being able to grab a cuppa, take a break and read a short story. Better than putting the news on these days that’s for sure!

The authors don’t have much time to tell their story, so the writing style is quite different. Short, mesmerising introductions and within a few paragraphs the scene is set and the characters are known. The story quickly picks up pace, leading the reader to a spine-tingly or twisted end. Brilliant.

Some of the stories gripped me more than others. For me, Linwood Barclay’s Night Shift stood out the most. A great read, I couldn’t read it quick enough to find out what happened. Great ending.

That said, TONIC also provoked a reaction of ewwwwwwww 🙂 That one will stay with me for a while.

I also enjoyed Alan Jacobson’s 12:01 AM, about a death row inmate who may have some key information about a copycat.

Jeffery Deaver’s story, A Creative Defense was certainly creative. If anyone hums a tune near me in future I’ll get goose bumps and won’t be hanging around.

Being an anthology this book introduces you to thirteen bestselling authors. I’ve previously read Linwood Barclay and Jefferey Deaver books, which I loved, so I’m keen to explore more of these authors in 2021.

Summary

My first anthology, what have I been missing! I shall be looking for more of these in 2021.

Jeffery Deaver introduces an enjoyable collection of chilling short stories. ‘Nothing Good Happens After Midnight.’ – Don’t you believe it!
