Book Blog Tour & Review: Murder Ahoy!

Today I’m joining the Book Blog Tour and review for Murder Ahoy! by Fiona Leitch (@fkleitch).

Famous crime writer Bella Tyson is hired to co-host a Murder Mystery cruise, on a luxury liner sailing from Southampton to New York. She’s expecting an easy ride; fun and games, surrounded by amateur sleuths and fans of her books, all the while staying in a deluxe cabin and enjoying the spa and the amazing restaurants on board, culminating in a visit to one of her favourite cities in the world – the Big Apple.

She’s NOT expecting to be stuck on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic with her two least favourite people in the world, her hot but unfaithful bastard ex-husband Joel Quigley and fellow crime writer, bitch goddess and Twitter frenemy, Louise Meyers. And when real live dead bodies start turning up – as well as fake not-really-dead bodies – Bella’s dreams of being pampered on the high seas turn sour.

Accused of a murder she would have liked to commit but didn’t, and helped (or hindered) by a gang of unlikely detectives, can Bella find out who the real murderer is before the ship reaches its destination and New York’s finest drag her off?

My Thoughts

When Bella Tyson and her husband Will agree to a working holiday with a difference, they underestimated how different it would be. Hired to host a Murder Mystery party on a cruise ship sounded like fun. But it soon turned sour when Bella the host becomes Bella the suspect #1.

I love a good murder mystery story, I’m usually pretty good at spotting clues and guessing the murderer before the end. Not this time. I had several ‘A-HA’ moments where I was convinced I’d worked it out, only to read on and realise it wasn’t her or him.

Bella Tyson, the main character, is down to earth and easy to like. She is a successful crime writer with a witty sense of humour. Bella tries not to take life too seriously and finds the funny side of most situations. Even when it’s at her own expense. She also has a feisty side, which I liked, and by the end of chapter 1 and couldn’t stop reading.

I also enjoyed the authors detailed description of life on the cruise ship. Reading about the Captain and his crew members, as well as the wealthy guests wandering around elaborately themed rooms in fancy ball gowns. I was able to visualise walking around the deck, following Bella and Will as they raced against the clock to solve the on-board crime before the ship docked in New York.

Summary

An enjoyable murder mystery that had me guessing right to the end. My Miss Marple skills were outwitted by Fiona’s clever writing. Great read.

Murder Ahoy! is a sequel to Dead in Venice. However, I found Murder Ahoy! is perfectly fine read as a standalone book.

About the Author

Fiona Leitch is a writer with a chequered past. She’s written for football and motoring magazines, DJ’ed at illegal raves and is a stalwart of the low budget TV commercial, even appearing as the Australasian face of a cleaning product called ‘Sod Off’. After living in London and Cornwall she’s finally settled in sunny New Zealand, where she enjoys scaring her cats by trying out dialogue on them. She spends her days dreaming of retiring to a crumbling Venetian palazzo, walking on the windswept beaches of West Auckland, and writing funny, flawed but awesome female characters.

Her debut novel ‘Dead in Venice’ was published by Audible as one of their Crime Grant finalists. Fiona is represented by Lina Langlee at the North Literary Agency.
