Book Cover Notes
Suzy Medley is having a bad day…
… when a shabby terrier turns up at her door. Just like Suzy, Scout has been abandoned, although only Suzy has been left with a financial mess and a business in tatters thanks to her ex.
Suzy takes Scout in and her chaotic world changes in unexpected ways: strangers have never been more welcoming and her teenage kids can’t wait to come home to visit.
Then a chance encounter on a windy Hebridean beach makes things more complicated, because Suzy isn’t the only one who needs a friend.
Scout has plenty of love to go round… but does Suzy?
My Thoughts
Yeah ok, I know I’m reviewing another cute dog book. What can I say, I can’t resist them. I was instantly drawn to the fun, bright book cover which I spotted on NetGalley.
- Cute dog (tick)
- feel-good story with a little bit of romance (tick) and
- something to do with a Whiskey Distillery
Ok now you’ve got my interest 🙂
Based in the Hebridean Islands, the story is narrated from the main characters point of view. I have to admit it took me 2-3 chapters to get used to who was speaking and follow what was happening. We are quickly introduced to Suzy, her husband Paul, Ricky, his girlfriend Meg and his son Arthur. Then there’s Arthur’s grumpy grandad Harry, oh and of course not forgetting Scout, the friendly and much loved island dog that no one seems to own.
Harry’s character was so similar to one of my own family members it was uncanny. Short tempered, often rude, stubborn and fiercely independent and yet Harry was a skilled and vital part of the island community. And the distillery!
Having been let down and dumped, Suzy’s life at 48 appears to have taken a wrong turn. She finds herself alone on the Island of Sgadansay with a huge financial burden and the challenge of her life. One evening Scout arrives at her door and she’s no longer alone. And slowly things begin to become clear and things begin to change.
I found myself rooting for Suzy as she bravely took on the challenges she was faced with. Friendships were formed and slowly she gained the respect and confidence to start again.
Summary
This is one of those feel-good stories you don’t want to end. I’m already missing Scout, Arthur and their island family.
If you love reading books with dogs in, that is light and easy to read maybe over the weekend then this should do the trick.
